A bevy of Missouri Valley section juniors took home hardware last week at the Junior National Opens, held at sites across the country.
Trisha Sundaram (Chesterfield, Missouri) put forth the most impressive showing, winning a gold ball by capturing the singles title of the Girls 12 division. Sundaram won an all-Missouri Valley final, besting Morgan Coppoc (Tulsa, Oklahoma) in the title match. Sundaram also placed third in doubles, pairing with fellow section junior Rehaana Butt of Concordia, Kansas. Butt finished third in singles to round out a strong tournament.
On the boys' side of the 12s, Christopher Dean (Omaha, Nebraska) competed well in his hometown, finishing third in doubles and reaching the quarterfinal round of the singles division.
The section also had several strong showings in the Boys 18 division in Denver, Colorado, as Chris Haworth (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) topped Jackson Withrow (Omaha, Nebraska) in the third-place match, avenging his loss in last month's Missouri Valley US Open National Playoffs men's championship. Haworth also took second in doubles along with Matt Hagan (Omaha, Nebraska). Withrow also posted a strong doubles showing, teaming with Bradford Zitsch (Columbia, Missouri) to take third place.
On the girls' side of the 18s division, the section saw two fourth-place doubles finishes -- at separate sites. At the Girls 18s championships in Denver, Colorado, Kate Vialle (Leawood, Kansas) and Mimi Fotopoulos (Prairie Village, Kansas) paired together and took home a fourth-place finish in the doubles division. Meanwhile, in Lexington, Kentucky, Olivia Sneed (Prairie Village, Kansas) and Madison Westby (Tulsa, Oklahoma) also snared a fourth-place showing.
At the Boys 16s championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Will Little (Joplin, Missouri) finished in third place in doubles.
